VALIDITY & EXPIRY
Does a 7-day eSIM last 168 hours?
Check whether a published activation window covers your planned arrival, then confirm when validity starts, how expiry is shown, and whether your last required connection falls before that timestamp.
PURCHASE TIMING CHECK
Can you buy this eSIM now?
Compare a planned purchase date with your expected first connection. The result uses only provider-wide windows confirmed in the official sources below; it is not a guarantee of activation.
Calendar-date estimate only. Time zones, exact cutoff hours, plan variants and promotional products may differ; recheck the selected plan before payment.
1. Separate the start trigger from the day count
A plan can begin when it is installed, when it first connects to a supported network, or under another package-specific rule. Airalo says most packages start on supported-network connection, but some start at installation, so its package Validity Policy must be checked.
2. Do not turn a label into an unverified timestamp
Holafly explicitly explains on its United States plan page that a one-day plan activated at 10 AM lasts a full 24 hours, until 10 AM the next day. RoamSelect does not extend that statement to every Holafly destination, duration, or other provider without plan-level evidence.
3. Check the exact expiry where the provider shows it
Ubigi says its account displays the expiration date and time after the plan starts. Saily says its app shows the expiry date. aloSIM says the selected eSIM package shows its expiration date. These account or app values are safer than estimating from a marketing day count.
4. Protect the final travel hour
If a seven-day itinerary depends on connectivity late on day seven, confirm the provider’s displayed expiry time before purchase or select a plan with more displayed validity than the trip. Flight delays, border crossings and arrival times can make an exact day-count match fragile.
5. Do not confuse the activation deadline with usable travel days
An unactivated plan can have its own deadline after purchase. Current public guidance gives different windows: Saily says 30 days, Nomad typically 60 days, Ubigi says six months for preloaded QR-code plans, and GigSky says up to 365 days. These windows do not add travel days after activation, and plan-specific exceptions still apply.
OFFICIAL-SOURCE DIFFERENCES
What each provider currently confirms
Scope matters: these statements apply only to the cited public guidance. Unknown timing rules remain unknown.
| Provider | Activate by | Confirmed start rule | Expiry evidence | Safe action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Airalo | Package-specific; some eSIMs must be put into use within a stated period after purchase. | Usually first connection to a supported network; some packages start at installation. | Package validity and activation policy are shown in package details; a universal 24-hour calculation was not confirmed. | Open Validity Policy and Additional Information before purchase and installation. |
| Holafly | No provider-wide buy-ahead deadline was confirmed in the reviewed destination guidance. | The cited destination page says the plan starts on connection to a supported network. | That page states a one-day plan activated at 10 AM runs for a full 24 hours. | Confirm the same rule on the exact destination and duration selected. |
| Ubigi | Preloaded QR-code plans must be activated within six months of purchase. | Arrival in a covered area; immediately if already in coverage. | The Ubigi account displays expiration date and time. | Distinguish a preloaded QR-code plan from an account recharge, then check My Account. |
| Saily | Install and activate the eSIM within 30 days of purchase. | Automatically when the installed eSIM reaches the destination. | Unused data expires when validity ends; the app displays the plan expiry date. | Install before travel, then confirm the app expiry display after arrival. |
| Nomad | Typically 60 days; the plan may auto-activate on day 60. Plum-backed eSIMs differ. | Usually after reaching the destination and connecting to an eligible network; DTAC Thailand activates on installation. | Validity begins on activation; the reviewed guidance does not establish one universal final-hour calculation. | Check the plan’s provider and activation timeline before installing a Thailand plan or buying far ahead. |
| GigSky | Up to 365 days after purchase. | First connection in the plan’s coverage area; Free Trial plans are an installation exception. | After activation the plan cannot be paused or restarted and expires on its set expiration date. | Confirm the coverage area and app expiration date; unused data is lost when validity ends. |
| aloSIM | No provider-wide buy-ahead deadline was confirmed in the reviewed public guidance. | Not established by the cited package-balance article. | The selected eSIM package displays an expiration date. | Use the package expiration display rather than estimating from purchase time. |
