NETWORK & IP LOCATION
Travel eSIM IP location and routing explained
The mobile network shown on your phone and the country websites infer from your IP address are separate facts. A travel eSIM can connect to a local tower while its internet traffic exits elsewhere.
1. Separate the radio network from the internet exit
Your phone first connects to a supported mobile network in the destination. The provider or its roaming partners may then carry that traffic through an international gateway before it reaches the public internet. The network name therefore does not prove where websites will locate your IP address.
2. Expect location-sensitive services to behave differently
A foreign IP can change a site’s language, currency, advertising or available content. It can also trigger additional checks. RoamSelect does not label a plan “banking-safe,” “streaming-ready,” “local IP” or “lowest latency” without plan-level evidence under comparable conditions.
3. Distinguish default routing from an optional location feature
Saily’s Virtual Location and Ubigi’s IP location control are selectable features. They should not be recorded as the default route of every connection. Coverage, exit IP, virtual location and a conventional VPN are separate comparison fields.
4. Verify the exact use case before purchase
If a work system, bank, government service or paid subscription requires a specific country IP, ask the provider whether the exact plan and destination support it. A provider statement about one market, such as Airalo’s China routing guidance, must not be generalized to other destinations.
OFFICIAL-SOURCE DIFFERENCES
What the provider evidence supports
These are routing and IP-location facts, not speed or service-access guarantees. Unknown provider behavior remains unconfirmed.
| Provider | Confirmed behavior | Evidence scope | Safe interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Holafly | Uses home-routed roaming through international gateways; a foreign IP may appear. | Provider-wide routing explanation; no destination-specific exit country is promised. | Do not label Holafly as local-IP from its destination network alone. |
| Saily | Virtual Location can reroute traffic through a user-selected remote location and is included with every Saily eSIM plan. | Optional in-app feature with 115+ locations; Saily says it is not a full VPN replacement. | Record Virtual Location separately from the plan’s default exit IP. |
| Ubigi | The app can switch between its available Regional IP and the account holder’s country-of-residence IP. | Usable across Ubigi coverage; residence-IP choice currently applies to residents of ten listed countries. | Confirm residence eligibility and the location displayed in the app. |
| Airalo | China-inclusive local, Asia regional and global packages route through gateways outside mainland China. | China coverage only in the cited guidance. | Do not generalize this routing behavior to Airalo plans in other destinations. |
| Nomad · aloSIM · GigSky | No provider-wide exit-country or local-IP guarantee was confirmed in the reviewed public guidance. | Unknown unless the exact plan or provider support confirms it. | Show as unconfirmed; do not infer local routing, speed or service access. |
