1. An eSIM does not automatically include a usable number

An eSIM is the digital profile, while the purchased package defines the service. Many travel products provide mobile data only. A number displayed in phone settings can be a non-functional identifier, so verify that the exact package explicitly includes voice and SMS before relying on it.

2. Separate carrier SMS from app-based calling and texting

WhatsApp, FaceTime, iMessage and VoIP apps can use travel-eSIM data, but that is not the same as receiving carrier SMS on the travel line. aloSIM’s Hushed offer is a separate app-based number, and Holafly Unlimited Plans deliver incoming SMS through the Holafly app or email rather than the phone’s standard messaging app.

3. A supplied number is not an OTP guarantee

Banks and online services decide which number types, countries and delivery routes they accept. Saily publishes a tested OTP and 2FA list and explicitly says not all platforms are guaranteed. RoamSelect found no provider-wide promise that every verification code will work, so retain another recovery method for essential accounts.

4. Identity checks can be product- or destination-specific

Airalo says some destination eSIMs require eKYC before purchase. Saily requires KYC specifically for its phone-number functionality while standard data-only plans typically do not. No equivalent provider-wide rule was confirmed in the reviewed public guidance for the other five providers; check the exact checkout and destination instructions.

5. Preserve access to the number you already use

If a bank, airline or account sends codes only to your existing number, a dual-SIM setup may let you keep that home line active for calls and SMS while the travel eSIM handles data. Confirm the home carrier’s roaming charges and disable data roaming on that line; receiving SMS abroad is controlled by the home carrier, not the travel-eSIM provider.
